Korea Electric Power Corporation Considers Abolishing Age Limit for Substation Electrician Certification

Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) has decided to consider abolishing the age limit of 65 for the substation electrician certification, following a recommendation from the National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK).

According to the NHRCK on the 26th, KEPCO is in consultation with related organizations to review the abolition of the age limit and the introduction of a physical fitness and health certification system.

The substation electrician certification is essential for the installation, maintenance, and repair work of high-voltage facilities such as transformers and circuit breakers.

Under the existing ‘Substation Electrician Education and Evaluation Management Standard’, KEPCO has revoked the certification at the age of 65.

However, the NHRCK received a complaint in February that the revocation of certification at the age of 65 or older was discriminatory and recommended the removal of this regulation.

The NHRCK cited the following reasons for the recommendation: the physical strength and ability required for the job vary by individual, the advancement of equipment has reduced the physical demands, and the accident rate for those aged 65 or older is not high.

The NHRCK welcomed KEPCO’s acceptance of the recommendation, stating, “We hope that a system that meticulously verifies work capabilities without uniformly excluding workers based on age will be established in preparation for a super-aged society.”
