Former professional baseball player Oh Jae-won (39) has been sentenced to prison in the first trial for drug use charges.
On the 26th, the Seoul Central District Court’s Criminal Division 28 (Judge Han Dae-kyun) sentenced Oh to 2 years and 6 months in prison for violating the Narcotics Control Act.
Additionally, Oh’s accomplice, identified as Mr. A, was sentenced to 1 year in prison with 2 years of probation.
The court ordered Oh to complete 80 hours of a drug addiction rehabilitation program and imposed a fine of approximately 24 million won.
The court stated, “Despite receiving a lenient disposition of conditional suspension of indictment for drug offenses in the past, Oh committed the crime again within a few months,” and added, “Considering his obstruction of the investigation by inducing false statements at the early stage of the investigation, the nature of the crime is severe and a stern prison sentence is inevitable.”
Oh is accused of injecting methamphetamine a total of 11 times from November 2022 to November 2023.
He was also indicted for storing about 0.4 grams of methamphetamine in a fire hydrant in a friend’s apartment corridor in April last year.
In addition, from January last year to March this year, Oh received 2,242 Stilnox tablets from nine acquaintances on 89 occasions and purchased 20 Stilnox tablets using a false name.
Notably, Oh was accused of breaking Mr. A’s phone with a hammer and grabbing him by the collar to intimidate him when Mr. A attempted to report the drug use to the police.
Oh admitted to the drug use charges but denied the assault and intimidation charges for retaliation. However, the court did not accept his denial, stating, “Mr. A’s testimony is consistent, and there is evidence of a conversation in which Oh apologized rather than actively denying the allegations immediately after the incident.”
Meanwhile, Oh is also facing a separate trial for an additional charge of receiving about 0.2 grams of methamphetamine in November last year, a charge he has admitted to.
