Lee Jin-sook, the nominee for the head of the Korea Communications Commission, has refuted allegations of misusing a corporate card during her tenure as president of Daejeon MBC, claiming that her usage was in accordance with internal regulations.
In a statement released on the 20th, Lee asserted, “I remember that the allocated amount at that time was relatively smaller compared to the main office executives,” justifying her use of the corporate card.
Previously, MBC reported that Lee used a total of over 140 million KRW under the pretext of business promotion expenses and entertainment expenses during her term as president of Daejeon MBC, and that over 16 million KRW was spent at affiliated stores within a 5km radius of her home in Daechi-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul.
In response, Lee argued, “Payments were made not only in Gangnam-gu but also in the areas including Seocho and Songpa,” accusing MBC of distorting the facts by suggesting she used the corporate card only near her home.
Additionally, MBC reported that on January 8, 2018, the day Lee submitted her resignation, she spent about 1 million KRW at a bakery and used the corporate card at a Korean restaurant and a cafe near her home in Seoul in the evening.
Regarding this, Lee explained, “I purchased confectioneries at the bakery to share with the staff, and had a meal with my driver on the way to Seoul,” criticizing the accusations as a malicious framing of her actions.
Lee strongly criticized MBC’s report as “a malicious distortion of the facts,” reiterating that her use of the corporate card was in compliance with internal regulations.
